How to Practice Piano

Warm up properly by eHow

Just as an athlete warms up before performing (or practicing), so should you. I play several instruments and I find the following warm up routine effective for all of them.

Wash your hands under warm running water for at least two minutes. I use a drop of dish washing soap to remove excess oil an dirt. Stretch your fingers and thumbs gradually, and work them through their entire range of motion. Massage the muscles in the ball of the thumb and palm.

The warm water stimulates the blood flow, and stretching properly helps avoid injuries. If I pick up an instrument and try to play it cold, it takes a good while before I can do some techniques, where if I do the warm up, it's like I have been playing for half and hour, right from the start.

Ways to Improve your Piano Playing

1. Find a qualified teacher
Under the guidance of someone who knows more than you do, you will learn faster and will begin playing much better. Don't forget you can also buy online courses to help if you don't like going out for lessons.

2. Practice make perfect
Practice regularly - try at least 30 minutes a day.

3. Set achievable goals
When practicing - pick a song that is suited to your skill level.

4. Go slow
Start playing each piece slowly. Never hurry through anything. When you’ve got the piece correct, work up to the correct speed progressively. Remember, patience is a great virtue.

5. Keep your eyes should be on the sheet music, not on the keyboard or for that matter your hands. If you find yourself looking at your hands or the keyboard corrected this habit immediately.

6. Choose a time throughout the day when you are alone and won't be disturbed by other memembers of your family.

7. Relax by playing pieces you already know.
Play a song which you know and can follow along with - this will help with your learner.
